Mother’s Day, the Spring Equinox, and the Return of the Great Mother

As we approach the Spring Equinox, we enter a moment of balance in nature — when day and night stand equal and the earth begins to awaken again. For many ancient cultures, this time of year was connected to themes of fertility, renewal, and the nurturing power of the Earth — what some traditions called the Great Mother.

Long before modern celebrations, spring festivals honoured the life-giving energy that brings new growth after winter. In many ways, this same spirit lives on in how we celebrate Mother’s Day today — a moment to appreciate nurturing, care, and the cycles of life that sustain us.

The equinox invites us to pause and ask: what is ready to grow in our lives this season?

Next Friday 20th March I’ll be holding a Spring Equinox gathering to mark this turning point of the year — a chance to reflect, reset, and welcome the energy of new beginnings.

I also hold seasonal and life-cycle ceremonies as a wedding and handfasting celebrant in the Bristol area, including blessingway and mother blessing ceremonies that honour the sacred transitions in our lives.

If you feel called to celebrate the season with us, you’re warmly invited to join!
